If you’re itching to get away for the weekend, to enjoy open spaces and fresh sea air without having to take a plane or ferry boat, Ocean Queen could be the answer. Be aware, however, that the drive is not for the faint of heart – the 4-hour drive covers less than 100 km but is evenly divided into 2 hours of traffic through Sukabumi and 2 hours of nausea-inducing zig zagging through hilly palm forest terrain.

The facilities at Ocean Queen are rustic and welcoming, with reasonably priced beach-front bungalows. There is a pool, where you may end up spending most of your time as the sea is often too rough to swim in (but a favorite with surfers). The cafe serves a mixture of Indonesian and western dishes. The bungalows come with simple cooking facilities and a refrigerator, so you can bring your own food. Upon request, staff can set up the barbecue pit in front of your bungalow and provide you with fresh fish and seafood. Simply put in your order early enough in the morning and they’ll deliver it by evening time.

There are various activities you can do. Simply ask the front desk to you in making arrangements for whitewater rafting, caving, deep sea fishing, boat trips and massages.

Tip: The bungalows can be full of mosquitoes when you arrive so bring along some bug spray (like Baygon) and spray the bedrooms right away so that by evening time the odors would have dissipated.
